Shifting to a bigger, better office is exciting for any company. But it can cause disruption and extended downtime during the transition phase, leading to loss of business.

Do not fret – proper planning and coordination will ensure that everything goes smoothly. To make the transition less stressful for everyone involved, just follow the procedure given below.

Step 1: Research corporate relocation companies

Check out the moving companies in your area and get detailed info on their business relocation services.

The safety of the office equipment is paramount, so reject any company that is not registered, does not provide moving insurance, or uses temporary / part-time contractors to move goods.

Step 2: Fix rates

After shortlisting companies, request an on-site estimate – it is more accurate than a phone quote. A representative from the company will come to the office, look at everything that needs to be moved, and tell you how much it will cost to move everything to the new promises.

Step 3: Plan the schedule

Communicate your expectations and requirements to the moving company and create a detailed schedule for relocation. It is advisable to consult with the movers on designing a floor plan of the new office – including the location of the workspaces, furniture and storage. This will come in handy while unpacking.

At the same time, brief your employees about the shifting schedule, and familiarize them with the location and surrounding areas.

Step 4: Take inventory

Paperwork is a necessary evil, so consult with the company to make sure you have all the required documents ready. This is especially important if you're shifting abroad.

The period before shifting is also a great time to trim office clutter. Take stock and get rid of unnecessary files and useless items at least a month before the move.

Step 5: Unload during off-hours

To minimize disruption during working hours, schedule unloading during off-hours, overnight or the weekend. It is important to maintain business continuity and ensure that your team is back in operation as quickly as possible. After all, you do not want to lose valuable customers. As with everything else, you have to consult with the movers and plan this in advance.

When relocating a business along with furniture and valuable equipment, it pays to know what you'll be doing and when. Constant communication between the employer, the employees, and the moving company is the key – it will help make the move an exciting experience for the company as a whole.

Are you moving to a new house down the street or even across the city? When you are looking to move, hiring experienced and professional residential movers is the best way to go to make sure all your items arrive safe and sound in your new place. Some of the most frequently asked questions that people looking to move have, should be addressed to make sure you have all the information before your move. That way moving day will run more smoothly …

  • Who packs all my boxes? Do I do It myself or does the moving company?
  • Do I have to wrap my own furniture? Or purchase materials for that?
  • Can I leave all my clothing and items in drawers?
  • Do I need to follow behind the truck to the new location?

Who packs all my boxes?

You pack all your own boxes in most cases. This includes all of your personal belongings like clothing, books, mugs, plates, etc. Make sure that you wrap things carefully and do not overfill the boxes with, for example, books as they are very heavy and can cause the boxes to break. Make sure you do not leave any extra space in the boxes because this will cause them to get bent and again could damage your things.

Now I did say, 'most cases' above because most moving companies do offer a service where they will literally pack everything up for you. This however, tend to be a very expensive added service so most people opt to pack their own items. But the service is available if that is something you wanted so you can save time / the hassle.

Do I wrap My Own Furniture?

No. The moving company will take care of wrapping all of your larger items. They will also use furniture blankets that are made of a heavier and more durable blank like material that keeps items from getting scratched or dirty during the moving process.

Can I Leave All My Clothing or Other items in Dresser Drawers?

Yes, you can leave items like clothing or linens in drawers if the furniture is sturdy. If you have a ready to assemble item (think Ikea) most movers recommend taking the items out. Also do not leave jewelry or small items in drawers as they can slip through cracks more easily or shift around in the drawers and break. Items such as books should not be left on shelves or in drawers as the weight of them is too much and can damage the furniture itself.

Do I Need to Follow Behind the Moving Truck to my new location?

Since we are talking about local moves, you can follow behind the truck to your new location. Either way you need to arrive either before or at the same time as the movers at your new location to let them in.

Hopefully this little Q & A has helped answer some questions you may have about residential moves !

OK, so your business is moving to a new location. This could be a very exciting time for your company or a very stressful one. This really all comes down to doing your homework before your move to make sure that you have the right crew for your job.

Lots of businesses looking to move might just hire a regular moving company for the job. This rarely works out in the long run because moving homes and moving offices are very different things and this is not the good kind of risk your business should take.

Like with all moving companies make sure to find a reputable company that is operating with USDOT licensing, legally binding paperwork and positive reviews online.

Here are a few reasons you should consider using a moving company that specializes in corporate moving.

Paper Weight

No not the decorative but someone useless item that sits on your desk … instead consider the actual weight and density of paper itself. Offices can be filled with files and documents. Some companies may have all these items digitally stored but many offices also have physical files or older files still in paper form. Packing and moving files means understanding that these items can have a high bulk weight and certain types of trucks or extra trucks could be needed.

Do not Get Your Wires Crossed

Many times residential movers will not have much experience dealing with computers, phone lines or fax machines at a corporate level. Corporate movers know how to take apart and re-set up this kind of time sensitive equipment and will make sure your office is left ready to start work again.

Timing Is Everything

Corporate movers understand that time is money so even if your office is moving a long distance they will work with your company to have an exact delivery and office set up time at your new location.

Be Assured by Being Insured

Corporate moves need a special kind of moving insurance, one that covers the building you are moving in and out of as well as your sensitive company information that is being transported to the new location. Ask the corporate movers you have chosen about all of their insurance options and make sure that you find one that offers the best coverage to protect you and your business.

Overall corporate movers are highly skilled and specialized in their field. They have the proper equipment, knowledge and experience to make your office move quick and easy so you are back and ready for business as soon as possible.

1. Cardboard boxes
You are going to need plenty of cardboard boxes in different sizes. Their sturdiness makes them ideal for carrying heavy items. Boxes also enable you to categorize the items increasing convenience in unpacking at your new property.

2. Cloth and Bubble wrap
Fragile items need an extra layer of padding for extra safety. Breakables such as dishes and glasses can be wrapped in bubble wrap or cloth before packing into boxes. It reduces the damage impact if banged. Also, the gaps in boxes can be filled with old rags and newspapers.

3. A Bag for the Essentials
Often, you pack all your stuff only to realize you require something that's gone into one of the boxes. Avoid such a situation by packing a separate bag with the all the essentials. This includes a change of clothes, toiletries, medicines and your laptop and cell phone charger.

4. Label your boxes
Label the packed boxes. The labels could read according to the room or the items present in the box for instance crockery, books etc. Paste the labels on the side of the box and not the top. In addition to labeling, you can also number the boxes. It helps keep count when loading and unloading, ensuring nothing gets left behind.

5. Heavier boxes at the bottom
It's common sense. For boxes that will be stacked, place the heavier ones at the bottom. This includes especially boxes containing furniture.

6. Declutter
You do not have to carry everything you currently own to your new home. Old and unwanted things, in good condition, can be donated to charity. An alternative is to get rid of them at a garage sale or sell them on eBay. This way you can save time and energy packing and unpacking unnecessary things.

7. Stretch Wrap
This is one of the packing tips for added protection during transit. You can club items together, wrap it and seal it. It is one of the best ways to pack furniture. Press and seal is also a great way to pack jewelry. Sandwich bags come handy for smaller items such as earrings, trinkets, baubles and pendants.

8. Packing clothes
Given that clothes take up the most space, here are a few smart packing tips to accommodate them. First, instead of folding your clothes you can roll them. Thicker materials such as sweaters, towels, bed sheets and curtains can double up as padding / wrapping for your breakables. Pack some of your clothes in vacuum seal bags as they take up less space.

9. Nuts and bolts
At the end of dismantling stuff, you will be left with a lot of screws, nuts, bolts, handles which due to their small size are easy to get lost. Collect all these bits of hardware in a small container or sandwich bag. I would recommend taping them to the dismantled furniture to avoid confusion.

10. Start early

Above all, you need to start packing well in advance. Do one room at a time, starting with the room that you need the least. Spreading it over a few days makes the process less taxing. The earlier you start, the better the packing will go.

Moving Trends of Millennials

The word millennial is constantly in the news; as the world becomes more technologically advanced and caters to the generation of the Internet. The word millennial is constantly in the news; as the world becomes more technologically advanced and caters to the generation of the Internet. The latest Google search will update you that Millennials are not eating cereal and older generations are going crazy! This is just one funny example of how anything 'millennial' looks newsworthy today.

But of course there are topics that are a little more interesting to note than breakfast habits. A Millennial is defined by anyone ages 18-35 and this group has really given America the run around postponing so-called 'growing up' well into their 30s. (As well as having a strong aversion to cereal)

Although there are still many people who get married and start families at a young age, on average the percentage of Millennials who stay single and post pone starting a family is much higher. This is changing how cities are developing and how adults are moving.

Many millennials stay at their parent's homes longer or move back to their family homes after college. When they do move out, most millennials are moving to urban centers. According to a survey on Rent.com * 44% of Millennials are moving towards urban centers.

Looking at the popularity of Instagram this generation craves food, art and culture like never before. Younger generations usually want a taste of something exciting but the rate of pop up midnight restaurants to street parades for dub step music taking over cities show that this generation is constantly craving culture so the fact that many of them are flocking to urban centers makes sense.

Because more millennial people are staying unmarried longer they are often times either chosen for or more willing to relocate for their job or company. Although the average millennial statistically is putting off starting a family until later, they are still willing to relocate for love ie moving for a significant other.

Technology: This has been definately defined by the younger generations with smartphones to online services to Siri which makes sense that Millennials if given the opportunity to get a service without having to interact in any way with a 'live' human, they will take that option . This is defiantly affecting all industries, having to update their websites and the way they conduct business.

Traditionally moving companies were a very hands on industry. (Which clearly they still are for the most part) A moving company website would probably just provide a phone number and then you would have an estimator come to your home to figure out the costs for your move. At a USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) conference in Austin Texas in 2015, the topic that continuously came up was that the millennial generation does not like having people come into their home if they do not have to. Having the convenience of doing all these steps online appeals to this demographic and since they move around a lot it would be worthwhile to cater to this market.

An online calculate your move tool can have anyone build their inventory by selecting pictures of all the items in their home and then getting an estimated cost all through the comfort of their own computer or phone. The fact is that millenials move a lot. Being a tech savvy generation means that businesses constantly have to keep up with trends and strive to find a way to appeal to millennials technological sensitivities.

It is important to know what this term means if you are one of the following …

A: You are Hiring Moving Company

B: You ARE a moving company and either do not have a Tariff or want to better understand how and why you need to fully understand Tariffs to better your business

The easiest way to understand a moving tariff is to think of it as basically a menu of services. The tariff must be printed out and presented in a physical form to the customer before the actual move can begin. This is a legal requirement and a digital copy does not comply with this law.

A moving company has every service they provide along with the price listed on the Tariff. This will also include the Bill of Landing and the Order of Services that the customer wanted or needed for their move. The first part of the moving tariff, which is the presented menu of services, must be the same for all customers. If a moving company wants to charge more for a service or even discount any charges they can not without the Tariff specifically states they can. All tariffs are ironclad and legally binding.

Are there different options for a moving tariff?

This is a good question. Many moving companies purchase templates online or purchase already created tariffs. This is not the best option for your moving company. Custom-built tariff options are available and even though the initial cost will be greater it will more than pay for itself. When you get a custom built tariff your company can pick pricing that makes sense for your business with the services you provide. Many moving companies fall into the trap of not even knowing what their own company's tariffs say! If you get a moving tariff built you are part of the process and you and your employees know exactly what the document says.

Not complaining with the Tariff or not having one is a dangerous game! Fines from a US DOT officer can be hefty and upward of $ 10,000 or more.

The bottom line is to make sure if you are a customer you have to be presented with and understand the companies tariff.

If you are a moving company make sure that you have a custom tariff built. This is the best way to empower yourself, your business and your employees. Make sure you can clearly and concisely answer the question ” what is a tariff ?”

Are you relocating to a new country? Have you been packing all your stuff to shift to another city? Are you finding it difficult to remember all the things you have packed and all those things, which are you leaving behind in your old house?

Shifting is a tedious job; when you pack, you need to know what things to put in the box and which things to leave in your old apartment so that either the new tenants can enjoy using them or you simply dump them into your old home. However, you can not leave all the things in your old house, since you might not come back to this place for a long time, after shifting to the new one.

Before you pack and leave from the place you are staying right now, here are the top 9 things you need to check:

1) Your favorite shoes: A lot of women place their shoes in different areas in the house; there are chances for some of your favorite shoes to be under the bed that you are not moving to the new house. Check all the corners and find out if you have taken all of your shoes.

2) Cosmetics: Did you ever keep an expensive lipstick in the small bathroom closet? If no, you may have forgotten about it already. Go check those bathroom closets before moving.

3) Accessories in your bathroom: Most of the people forget their expensive products in bathroom; keep an eye on all the things you are leaving behind.

4) Gold jewelry in the locker or safe of your wardrobe: If you are relocating to your new house, you really need to check the locker or safe in your wardrobe; it may have some gold or silver jewelry that you must not forget.

5) Valuables in your safe: Most of the people keep their valuables in their safes; check them before you go.

6) Your resume and other important documents: Do not leave your resume and other important documents behind; not even the photocopies!

7) A few of your sketches kept safe under the bed: So what if you drew them 'just like that?' They deserve to be shifted to your new house.

8) Your family photograph on the wall: If you think that's the last thing you would tell the movers to take off the wall for you, you are definitely going to forget about it.

9) Some of the gifts you never used, but dumped into the cabinets: Most of us dump unused gifts in different cabinets and then forget everything about them. Check those cabinets before you leave your old house.

When a business is moving offices, usually someone is appointed as the overall planner and relocation manager.

That's sometimes a thankless task which can lead to sleepless nights. What follows may at first glance appear to be adding to those concerns but the subject of contingency planning is an important one and can not be ignored.

What is such a plan and how do you go about building it?

The “what if” game

It's an old adage that something is bound to go wrong, somewhere, in your office relocation. In fact, it's also probably untrue because if you use professional office movers your move will probably be routine.

However, one of the key undercoming concepts behind contingency planning is that you can not be sure that will be the case. Your objective is to set out to try and identify those things that could go wrong and have put into place 'ready to go' pre-planned actions to deal with such problems – should they arise.

The first stage of this is usually to try and make a list of things that could go wrong in spite of all your efforts to the contrary. That might include things such as phones not working in your new location on the first morning of your business or file servers not being up and running etc.

Do not be put off at this stage in the process by colleges offering bland reassurances that such a thing could ” never happen “. Your response should always be ” yes, maybe so but what if it does?

Your contingencies

Having come up with an outline of some of the things that could go wrong, you then need to decide what you would do about each of them in turn.

For example, your contingency for non-working land lines on day-one might be having the ability standing by to switch all calls to your land lines through to a number of mobiles. It might be as easy as that.

Inter-dependencies

Some people think that, having done the above, they have a contingency plan in place.

Of course, they have absolutely no such thing. That's because in order to invoke your contingency plans, you will need to have the support and assistance of third parties. If you have not bothered to tell them that they're potentially going to have to do something out of the ordinary if you hit the panic button, then the chances are they will not be ready.

For example, having failed to outline your above contingency for landline failures to your telecoms provider, you should invoke it in a crisis you might find that it would take 24 hours to put into place due to the absence of prior notice.

Understanding your interdependencies in terms of who will need to do what if you invoke your contingency plans is a critical task. That must be followed up by confirming with all those parties that they know they are now in your plans and that they can react very quickly to help should something go wrong. This is called getting their 'buy in' to your planning.

Taking advice

Some professional office movers might have specialist advice and guidance available on this important subject. It may be worth talking to them rather than simply going forward exclusively on the basis of expecting that ” it'll be alright on the night “!

If you're moving home and have an antique (or modern) grandfather clock, you might find the following advice useful.

Grandfather clocks

The technical term for a grandfather clock is a “Longcase Clock”.

That actually incorporates various types of floor-standing taller clocks including Grandmother, Morbier and Comtoise Clocks etc. Many of these will be antique and probably made in the 19th or earlier 20th centuries although some could be 18th or even 17th century in origin.

The chances are, it'll be an expensive item but also one that's difficult to move and heavy.

Ideally, such objects should be packed and made safe ready for shipment by a furniture removals and professional packing company. If you do decide to do it yourself though, you should take the following steps.

Preparation

Most longcase clocks will have heavy wooden cases that usually, though not always, come apart into two or three sections.

Do as follows in this sequence:

  1. Remove the hood – that is the top part of the case that normally covers the dial and movement. Many lift off, some slide off and in certain situations the hood may be on catches which need to be released. Sometimes the side panels on the hood detach separately. It can then be carefully packed.
  2. Remove the pendulum, being careful not to damage the suspension spring it hangs from.
  3. If your movement is weight driven, they will be hooked onto the chain or cord hanging below the clock. Hold each weight (there may be one, two or three) and unhook it, watching your toes in the process. NOTE – depending upon your clock type and ease of access, it might sometimes be necessary to remove the weights before the pendulum. Take advice if you're unsure.
  4. If your clock is mainspring driven, the movement can then be removed. In many cases it will just lift up or slide out. Sometimes it may be secured by clips or even screws.
  5. If your clock is weight-driven with a chain the weight (s) is / are attached to, you may need assistance because as you lift the movement free, the chain will come with it and drag through the clock casing at the top. That could lead to scratching of the case if you're not careful. Try not to remove the chain unless you know what you are doing.
  6. Place the movement down so that it can not be damaged. Avoid placing it dial-down (hands can get bent) or flat on the rear, as the pendulum suspension spring or crutch (where the pendulum rests) could be bent.
  7. The bottom part of the casing, sometimes one or two pieces, can now be packed for shipment. Note that it's fairly commonplace to find the main body of a longcase clock has been somehow secured to the wall behind it for stability and to keep the clock at 90 degrees.

Packing

There is no firm rule for packing a clock movement, as they and their vulnerabilities will differ one from another. Think again, particularly if it's an expensive clock, whether you should have specialist packing.

Remember that whatever approach you adopt, try to keep pressure and weight off the dial and hands at the front and the rear where the suspension spring is. It might be highly advisable to consider removing the dial and packing it separately for shipment but be careful not to lose parts of the 'motion work' (elements of the mechanism under the dial) if you do remove it.

What Is The Real Cost Of Moving?

Getting ready to move? This might seem like the most daunting thing in the world, especially when you open your first drawer and you start to realize that even if you have a reliably neat house it still adds up to a lot of stuff! This is when a state of sheer panic may start to set in! Hiring a moving company is not as expensive as many people might think it is!

The first thing to remember is to stay calm! I know this is easier said than done, but I thought I would say it anyways! Do it yourself moving is an option that a lot of people choose instead of hiring movers. This is probably not a true love of hauling items up and down steps but rather with more concern for your wallet. Although this can be cheaper in theory, one of the most common problems that truck rental companies have is people needing to take a lot more time than they originally anticipated or booked the truck for which results in unforeseen higher moving costs. It can take a lot of time to move all your items and to make sure you can logically arrange them in the truck. Also having your items arrived damaged seemed much more likely!

Hiring a moving company is not as expensive as many people think it is. If you are moving in your own city, many times you can get a moving company that charges by the hour and that can help keep your costs down. If you are moving farther away or even across the country the stress of driving all your items yourself and navigating roads that a larger vehicle can drive on can be daunting.

The number of items being moved also affects the cost. One of the easiest ways to estimate your moving cost is to use a moving calculator. The number of boxes, the size of your apartment or house and the distance of your move are all factors. It is possible to get a premium moving service with all the cleaning and unpacking additional services but that is not necessary if cost is still your main concern. Being someone who has moved many times over the last few years, I would recommend taking a look at a moving calculator to get a better idea of the costs for your particular move.

At the end of the day, make sure to compare costs of at least 3 companies. Remember that they will have competitive pricing but also choosing quality service is key when it comes to the safety of all your items. Good luck and happy moving!
