Moving. It's exciting, busy, a little bit crazy and a whole lot stressful. It means going through drawers and closets that perhaps have not seen the light of day since they were opened after your last move, determining what items make the cut and which ones get cut, and then deliberating about how to pack up the items you need It means several long days and late nights all so you can finally arrive in your new residence and -to some degree- begin the tedious process of unpacking and getting established in a new home.

Typical Packing Mistakes

No matter if you relocate your home or your business, moving can be a really challenging experience. No matter if you relocate your home or your business, moving can be a really challenging experience. And there are so many factors that can complicate things even more, from weather conditions to forgetting to notify some companies about the address change. Furthermore, the packing part of the process must be treated with utmost care. Find out the most common packing mistakes you can do during a move.

1. Packing everything in old, used boxes. The success probability of your move depends directly on the quality of your moving supplies. You might be tempted to re-use some boxes. In many cases this is a big mistake, since the structure of the box might be compromised. Do not pack heavy or fragile items in used boxes. Buy new, sturdy ones.

2. Forgetting to create an “open first” box. For residential moves, this is also known as an “essential box”. It contains everything needed in the first 1 or 2 days upon reaching the destination. You will need to add personal hygiene items, bedding, cutlery and some clothes. Pack this “open first” box and set it aside. It should be the last box loaded in the transport vehicle, so that it can be the first box unloaded.

3. Forgetting to label boxes. This is another big mistake, which will cost you a lot of time and nerves. When packing for a move, it's very important to be organized by taking inventory of your items as you pack. By labeling the contents on the box, it will be easier for you to find the items you need when unpacking.

4. Overburdening your boxes. We all think that the more items will pack in a box, the easier and faster we will get things running. But in many cases, the things are quite opposite. Overburdening a box increases the odds of causing an accident when transporting it. Know the maximum weight a box can handle and do not fill it with more than that.

5. Leaving empty spaces in boxes. Is the opposite of what we've just talked about. Having a box too empty is also undesirable. Why? Because the empty space will give room to the items inside to move during transit. And if you are transporting valuable and fragile items, they can easily break. This is why it is recommended to buy boxes of all sizes and use cushioning materials to keep items in place inside the box.

The Fundamental Checklist For Moving Abroad

The planning involved with any move is of paramount importance and never more so than when preparing for an overseas adventure. Make sure you mastermind the move to your dream destination and upping sticks will not seem like such an insurmountable task. Take a look at our checklist of essential tasks to help make your overseas move go as smoothly as possible.

Research red tape

To be admitted as a resident to the country of your choice you must hold the appropriate paperwork. As such, visas are the most important element of any overseas move. While many businesses may supply their employees and their families with the appropriate work permits or visas, it's still advisable to meet with an immigration office for your destination country.

When arranging your own immigration, it's essential to complete all paperwork correctly. The visa application process for some countries can be painfully long, so ensure your proposal for permanence meets with requirements. Employing the services of an immigration lawyer is one way to help shred the red tape. Specialists in this field can also offer useful help with application forms and other elements of the immigration process as a whole. Make sure you understand the immigration laws of your chosen country. Make a note of submission deadlines for forms and importantly, the legalities surrounding residency.

Similarly, ensure both yours and your family's identification documents are current and accessible. From birth and marriage certificates to driving licenses and medical records, you'll need to be able to easily access all important documentation. A good tip is to back up your documents digitally. Scan and store them in the Cloud to ensure they are readily available at all times.

Figure out your finances

From the cost of living to the practical costs involved with moving, it's important to make provision for both the resettle period and beyond. Considerations may include an emergency fund as well as financial planning for the future.

Depending on your residency status, you may still need to pay UK tax even when you're living abroad. However, if you are taxed in more than one country you may be able to claim tax relief. With this, it is worth contacting the Inland Revenue to discuss if this would be applicable to you. You will also need to check the tax policies for your destination country.

It's advisable to check with your bank wherever you can use your funds overseas. Most banks provide an online banking facility and large global banks often have services specifically for expats. Opening a bank account overseas may not be as straightforward as you'd imagine. As such, contact your current bank for advice on how to open accounts abroad.

Cost of living variates hugely around the world. Work out average daily and periodic expenses in your destination, as it's essential to be able to afford your new life abroad.

Get a move on

It's easy to underestimate the cost of moving abroad. However, from furniture to people and even pets, moving abroad is no mean feat. Ensure you have realistic estimates of the costs involved to avoid any nasty shocks.

It's generally advisable to look into arranging your household removal overseas with a minimum of one months' notice, but ideally, as soon as possible. The notice period required is often dependent on the time of year, as some months are busier than others for international movers. It's definitely important to obtain quotes from at least three different removal companies . A reputable removable firm may well visit your property prior to confirming a booking, as this enables them to accurately assess the volume of goods to be moved. This also offers an ideal opportunity to discuss any custom requirements. Specialist international movers are able to supply you with a guide for your destination country's customs requirements regarding household goods. Having familiar things from home will help to make relocating an exciting rather than merely overwhelming experience.

Home sweet home

Initially, renting a property may be preferred to purchasing. Yet whether you rent or buy, it's important to have somewhere to hang your hat when you come to help lessen the initial upheaval. Technology has made it much easier to find a home abroad without having to travel.

For means of security, it is recommended to keep hold of your domestic home in case you have a change of heart about moving abroad. A sensible approach would be to rent out your UK home, settle into your new surroundings and give yourself time to house hunt. It is worthwhile to also carry out your research about buying a house in the country you have decided to move to.

Cover your health care

Make sure you check the health care available in your destination country. It may be that you are covered by your NHS contributions. However, equally, you may need to take out private health insurance. You will need to notify your GP of your move. Once you move from the UK permanently you will not usually be associated to NHS healthcare in the UK and will need to deregister from the scheme.

Furthermore, healthcare requirements differ from country to country. If you are registered to work and pay tax, you should be entitled to state-run healthcare on the same basis as a resident of that country. Yet, many countries still expect residents to make patient contributions or to join a national health insurance scheme. Make sure you also confirm any injections that may be required and arrange these in plenty of time prior to traveling.

The stress of relocating abroad can overshadow what should be an exciting time. With good planning and preparation, the right support and a reputable removals firm, the transition to your new life overseas will be made much easier.

Moving is a really complicated process and this matter should not be tread lightly. Packing all household items and dedicated equipment requires lots of time and utmost attention. It also requires sufficient manpower. A family of 3 or 4 can not finish this task in a single day, even if they do their best. If this is also your case, exterior help would be greatly appreciated. But should you rely on your friends and relatives or call a moving company? In most cases, hiring professional movers is the best solution and we will explain why.

It is important to have sufficient manpower, but it is very important to have the qualified manpower. Working with amateurs proves to be in many cases, the wrong approach. Sure, your friends and relatives would gladly help you pack all of your stuff, but they are not experts and they can make quite costly mistakes. For example, there are certain rules regarding packing, storing and placing boxes with fragile items. If your friends do not know them, you can end up with damaged items. Surely you do not want to break precious porcelain plates or vases.

Plus, those persons are amateurs and they are not used to cope with a lot of stress or to carry very heavy objects. Even moving furniture pieces requires some knowledge- where to place your hand, how to lift them and how to carry them. Movers also bring their dedicated equipment when they arrive at the workplace. So, a moving company will offer all sorts of furniture pads, hand trucks, loading platforms and so on. These will certainly make the task look easier and will help finish the whole relocation process much faster. This is why anyone should hire a mover.

A mover provides all logistic support needed for a relocation. Local moving companies will provide specially designed moving gears like hand trucks, dolls, furniture pads and special containers. Plus, they will help you with high quality packing materials, if you need some. But what is more important is that they will bring a large cargo truck or a van with sufficient room to place all your items there. In this way, you will ship away all of the packed items in a single turn.

Hiring a mover ensures that your items will be placed in an adequate container. They offer shipping containers in many sizes from small-medium mobile units to sea-can containers needed for an international move to a foreign, overseas location.

Moving to another place can be a really stressful experience. Alongside the sheer amount of physical efforts, you must also be concerned about the safety of your blessings and the ones who are helping you. Carefully plan your move in order to avoid property damage and injuries. Check the following safety tips.

The first thing to do is to ensure that your home is ready for moving operations. This means that it must have clean and dry floors. So, you should keep some cleaning products handy and load them last, in order to clean some areas, when needed. Furthermore, you must remove all objects from the main path for transporting boxes. Cover the walkway with non-slip plastic sheeting and carpet film.

Pay attention to narrow spaces and make sure that you do not damage the walls or the items you are transporting. Taking corners when moving fragile items or furniture must be planned ahead. You can protect the walls with cardboard, using tape to secure it. Moving items on stair railings is also challenging. You should cover the railing and make sure you do not damage the spindles.

Door jambs can be easily scratched and damaged, especially when moving cumbersome furniture. Use professional covers to protect the door frames during relocation.

When it comes to protecting your beloveds, the best tip is to use high quality moving supplies. You will need professional and specialist moving boxes, depending on the nature of your cargo. It is a good idea to buy multiple boxes, of different sizes. Additionally, there is a vast number of specialty boxes for various electronics and fragile glassware items. Scan the market for the most suitable boxes.

Have plenty packing supplies at your disposal when you start packing. Packing paper, moving blankets, stretch wrap and paper padding are typically used for protecting your items. For fragile items use extra layers of protection.

When moving furniture, it is a good idea to measure the doorways, hallways and stairways. Also, if possible, dismountle the furniture, in order to make transport easier.

And, of course, you must protect yourself during the move. Make sure you do not overburden yourself with too heavy boxes and take some breaks from time to time. Make sure you are well hydrated, especially if you move during summer. Use proper lifting techniques when moving furniture or other heavy items. In order to avoid cutting or pinching your hands, you should wear gloves.

Finding the best movers is kind of like finding the right auto mechanics. It can take research and trial and error. There are a lot of car technicians that know how to work on cars, but not all of them get the job done right. In addition to that, pricing for moving services (like automated services) can be all over the map. But you do not have to stress about it. With the right steps it can be a breeze.

In many cities across the country, tons of moving companies offer relocation services. For example: A search for “best movers” returns a result of hundreds of companies vying for business. With so many search results to choose from, how do shoppers know which mover to go with? And which one of these moving companies will show up, and do a great job you might be thinking.

Time to do a little homework. Consumers can specify things like length of time in business, the number of moves completed, review ratings, price rates, etc. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Would-be customers should also consider a mover's insurance options, experience, services available, and the amount of back-end help available. Moving is a tough business, and buyers should be confident in their choice of mover.

5 Tips For Planning A Move

Moving can be stressful, but also exciting. A new city, new house or new neighborhood can also mean new beginnings. So how do you turn the stressful part of moving into excitement? By having a plan. Below are 5 tips for planning your move.

Decluttering. One of the first things you can do when you find out you may have an upcoming move on the horizon is to declutter room by room. This is important for a number of reasons. First, when you put your house on the market, it will sell faster and for more money. A house always looks bigger with less “stuff” inside. Second, when you move, having less stuff to pack, load, unload and unpack will save you both time and money. It's also a very freeing process once you get started.

Dispose of hazardous waste. Hazardous wastes can not be packed in moving trucks. If you have things like gasoline, paint and chemicals in your garage, ask if a friend or neighbor would like them. If not, look online to find your nearest hazardous waste disposal site. If you plan to use any of the same paint colors in the new house, be sure to record the information needed before disposal.

Research your moving company. This is critical and can often get overlooked if your move is a sudden one. Be sure to read reviews online before deciding on a mover and do not hire a mover based solely on price. Experience, knowledge of your area and skill level (like moving a grand piano) counts for much more. It's also helpful to know that many movers will give a low bid to get your business and then later charge more. Reading reviews will avoid surprises and disappointments.

Transfer records. If you have school-aged children, you will need to have their school records transferred to their new school. Getting this out of the way now will mean less for you to do on the other end of your move. Medical records are another thing to have transferred. If you do not have your new doctors lined up yet, you can ask for a copy of your records or make a list with phone numbers and addresses of the doctors / dentists / chiropractors from which you will need to obtain information.

Update your address. You can update your address for the postal service online . It's also important to share information with friends and relatives. Consider sending out a change of address group email or posting something on Facebook to let others know how to contact you in the future.

Moving can be exciting but also overwhelming, which is why we've put together these packing tips to simplify the process for you. 1. Locating boxes. If your moving company is not providing the boxes or you are making a local move, you have a a couple of options for obtaining supplies. Many moving companies offer used boxes for a reduced price or free. Also, grocery shops and liquor stores give away free boxes. Grocery stores typically unpack supplies in the morning so get there early before they have already recycled them.
  2. Order matters. You do not want to start the packing process with your kitchen or you will not be able to eat and serve meals for a week or longer. Begin with storage areas and closets that do not get used as often. If you do not expect a smooth transition from one home to the next or if space to store packed boxes is minimal, consider renting a PODS storage unit to hold boxes as you pack them. Order also matters within each box. Larger items (like books) should be packed in small boxes or on the bottom only of larger boxes or they will get too heavy to lift. Lighter and delicate items should be placed near the top of boxes or in larger boxes.
  3. Tricks of the trade. Plates should be packed on their sides, not flat. Placing a foam plate between each one and then wrapping a pack in paper gives good protection. Use Glad Press & Seal to keep items in divided trays (think silverware drawer). Items stored in furniture drawers can stay put. To keep drawers from opening, wrap your furniture with stretch wrap film. Hanging clothing can be left on hangers. Use a trash bag and punch a hole in the bottom with your fingers. Place a group of hangers (10-15) through the whole to create a makeshift garment bag out of the trash bag. Place a second bag on the bottom of the clothing and pull up. The two bags can be sealed with packing tape to protect your clothing. Hanging clothing packs stack nicely on the back seat of a car or on top of boxes in the truck.
  4. Labeling is important. Whether you label the boxes with the room they should go to, the room they came from or the contents of the box, the key is to stay consistent. If movers will be carrying in the boxes, they are going to be looking for writing that tells them which room your box will go to. Signs on bedroom doors will help them know where to bring the boxes. Labeling things like curtain rods, hooks & nails for hanging things, cords & cables will also be a lifesaver on the other end. If your electronics cords scare you, take a picture of how they are all hooked up before you unhook and pack them. It's also wise to backup your computer before unhooking. It may be awhile before it is hooked back up to your back up drive.
  5. Pack for your trip. If you are moving across country, you will need to pack for the travel days to your destination. I recommend packing for more days than expected, just in case. Moving vans are notorious for arriving late and sometimes boxes do not get unpacked immediately. You will also want to put together an emergency folder to have with you in the car. Vital records, bills to pay, moving company information and to do lists can be stored here. Lastly, pack an essentials box with items you will need right away when you move in (toilet paper, paper plates, cutlery, coffee, etc).

An essential reality of home ownership, is, the house we purchase, may, at some point, no longer meet our evolving needs, and priorities. Our life – cycle may change, because of either family considerations, or a variety of other factors, and we may discover, we need, to consider, doing something, to address these changes. When factors change, and we need, a larger home, often, we must decide, whether to renew, enlarge, expand, or alter, our present house, or look for another home, to call our own. With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly examine, discuss and review, 5 considerations.

1. Evaluate the existing home / property: How much do you enjoy the neighborhood, and / or area, where you currently stay? What are the strengths, and weaknesses, as well as the limitations and possibilities? How would you alter the house, to meet your present needs? Would these changes, adequately, meet or exceed, your present and probable, future needs?

2. Needs: How have your needs changed, and why? Can you afford living in larger quarters, or can you make minor changes, which may make your existing conditions, meet your evolving needs and requirements?

3. Costs / inconveniences of renovating: Most people fail to realize, what the total costs of renovations, might be! They almost always under – estimate, the costs, length of time, etc, which might be involved. What might you do, to overcome and handle, the inconveniences, involved, during the construction?

4. Zoning considerations: Different towns, cities, villages, and municipalities, have various zoning considerations, and specifications / rules. Before deciding how to proceed, consult an expert in zoning, and learn, what is possible, and plausible, in your present location. Will the rules accommodate and permit, you, to make the changes, you seek, in a reasonable manner? For example, some municipalities have regulations, regarding the maximum percentage of square footage, permitted, and, if you need, more than that, or desire it, your final decision is simplified.

5. Real estate market, in terms of present home's value, and probable cost for house, you seek: Consult with a trusted, real estate professional, and ask for a conservative estimate, of what, your home, might garner, if you put it, on the market, as well as, what, a house, with your priorities, and specifications, might cost. Ask the individual for a conservative estimate for the sale, and a worst – case, scenario, for the new purchase!

Obviously, there is no, one – size – fits – all, avenue, which is best, for everyone. Carefully examine your true needs, what you seek, your goals, goals, and priorities, and your financial considerations!

In what follows below, an expert in the removals industry will offer some responses to questions relating to burglary prevention when moving home.

Why are the subjects of home removals and burglary linked?

In many respects, they are not!

Burglary is unfortunately an ever-present risk for almost every household and that's the case wherever you have been living in a property for years or are in the course of moving home.

However, there may be times when burglary can be linked to home removals. That may happen in situations where you own or are renting a property but are unable to immediately move into it for one reason or another.

As burglars typically prefer unoccupied properties, the risks may be higher in such circumstances.

What can I do if a must leave either the property I'm vacating of the one I'm purchasing, unoccupied for a while?

In the case of most removals, where a property at either end of the chain is going to sit unoccupied, it will also typically be empty. That's important because while vandals may be attracted by any property that is unoccupied, including those that are empty, most burglars typically will not be because they are after the contents – contents that will not be there.

Whenever you are able to immediately move into a property, whether furnished or empty, it would be prudent to make sure that it is well protected by alarms and security locks. Where feasible, you can also ask neighbors to keep an eye on the property until you are in a position to move in.

Is there anything I can do to guarantee that burglars and vandals will not be able to gain entry?

No. It's as simple as that.

Some of the most secure locations in the world including banks and exclusive jewelers have been successfully burgled in spite of a plethora of security systems.

However, it's important to keep in mind that most of us are illegally to be facing such a threat. The vast majority of domestic burglars and vandals are opportunistic – they're looking for fast, instinctive and easy opportunities that can take advantage of at a given moment. They are not master criminals planning months ahead.

So again, this comes back to making sure that your property is reasonably secured with approved quality locks, bolts and burglar alarm systems. If the criminals think that it looks “tricky”, they will almost always move on to somewhere that looks to be easier pickings.

Even though, you can not turn your property into a fortress.

Why do some security professionals talk about disguising your property?

Burglars are extremely unlikely to enter a property if:

  • they believe it to be occupied at the time;
  • it appears as if there is nothing of obvious value in it to steal;
  • it is well protected by appropriate security systems.

The last of those points has been dealt with previously.

The first point is interesting because it means you should avoid anything that obviously advertises that your property is going to stand empty or more correctly “unoccupied”, while you are moving. Examples include mail building up, grass going uncut and curtains being left open with no lights on once it gets dark.

The second point is also relatively common sense.

If your windows are close to a public thoroughfare and you have what might be called “open curtains”, burglars will be able to quickly glance in your window to see what's inside. If you have some of your most valuable and prized possessions conveniently on display and easily visible from the window, your property could have been marked as a potential target.

Avoiding all these things generally helps avoid your property being seen as vulnerable or a worthy target.
